2014 was the year I discovered the amazing Frida Kahlo. I first stumbled upon a photo of her on the internet and from there it led to a spiral of discovering her artwork and more about her as an individual.

Similar to the reason why most people might admire her, I admired her for her resilience, her confidence and her strength. Not only was she a great artist, but on a more personal level, I looked up to her as a role model.

Her artworks, on the other hand, were pieces that were very different from my own style of art. For starters, I have (almost) never drawn or worked on self-portraits up until making this series. But what I admired about them was the huge spectrum of self-portraits in her collection. They ranged from simple pieces like "Self-Portrait in a Velvet Dress" (1926) to self-portraits conveying multiple meanings and expressing a multitude of emotions. But in every piece one thing was consistent, and that was the honesty in her work, which is something I hope to achieve in my art journey.
